Funk 'n' Monk is a groove-oriented contemporary jazz group. With an emphasis on sophisticated harmonies and funky beats, they span the gap between soulful, danceable hard bop and the more interesting, intellectual aspect of jazz music. The band specializes in re-arranging many of the classics of the jazz masters in a fresh, catchy and usually funky fashion to appeal to all levels of the jazz audience. A quintet of sax, guitar, vibes, drums and electric bass, the group features some of the best improvising musicians in the pioneer valley and is co-led by Holly Havis, bass and Johnny Clark, guitar. Their CD is available through emailing them a request with your address and a check for $10.00.

Johnny B. & the Hornets consists of the same personnel as Funk 'n' Monk but they perform an entirely different repertoire! The Hornets specialize in Motown, R&B, British Invasion, and all kinds of danceable rock. While they play the hits, they typically dip beyond the standard soul tunes. "We don't do the same oldies tunes that all the oldies bands do, " Clark says. "I'll play an Otis Redding tune that maybe people haven't heard in a while, or borrow a cool horn line from an old Etta James record for another song. There's a whole wealth of repertoire that's out there and forgotten, and it can be redone in a contemporary fashion and really kick it into high gear." |
